This is HUGE.
I was a bitter young man.
(Teens, 20’s ….) Cynical, angry, obnoxious, pick your adjective … And totally mistrustful of my parents.
Despite the fact I was well-fed, never threadbare, cold only if I stayed outside in a snowbank . . . . (Quebec? January?) . . . . and well educated. And apart from a mortgage, always debt-free.
(Must be nice, says Millenial. Yeah. Shoulda been grateful. Wasn’t.)
I’d become convinced my folks were out to Keep me DOWN.
(Some truth to it. But the motive was unconscious, never malicious.)
I’d heard plenty of freedom-through-forgiveness stories.
But it’s one thing to know a theory. The practice …. ?
Alone in a park one spring day, I gambled.
“I forgive Dad.”
Then again, a bit louder. “I FORGIVE DAD.”
I’ll never forget the Release. The lift in my mood. The loss of tension across the shoulders. The gut contentment.
Like any painkiller, Forgiveness has an effect for a time. I had to repeat the experiment next day, and for a few days.
But also like painkillers …
Forgiveness is habit-forming.
You get hooked on the FREEDOM. (Hint: This is one drug you WANNA be hooked on.)
I’m forever grateful I found it when I did. Dad became my best bud.
And then I lost him.
Too early. The Big C.
Buuuuut . . . . with no regrets. No unfinished business. The memories are sweeeeeet, baby.
