“…. is sick, Dave! They need a stand-in bass. Grab your beast! C’mon!”

Oh wow. Retrieving my bass, I sprint after him.

After two minutes …. “Who was sick again?”

“Adam Clayton!” he yells back.

“Oh, OK ….”

I keep running, but suddenly I feel The Cold Trickle.

“Adam …. Wait a minute. Adam WHO?”

“CLAYTON! C’mon! You’ve only got a couple of hours!”

Bloody HELL. I am going onstage with U2.

Crazy?

You bet.

And that’s the point.

(Disclaimer: The above fantasy didn’t happen. (Yet :-) I don’t wish it on Adam Clayton. Just picked on him because I’m a bassist.)

You’ve gotta have some crazy, off-the-wall dreams, that you entertain late at night when you need a pick-me-up.

Two reasons:

1. Cuz you need a pick-me-up. Doh.

2. Life’s too short to never dream crazy.

It’s the behind the crazy things that Great Opportunities hide.

Progress is Non-Linear. Day-after-day tedium, interspersed with sporadic Wildness.

Watch any performance …. music, sport, whatever …. and you’ll see that it’s the crazy things that make it memorable …. that turn the Also-Ran into the new Million-Dollar Celebrity.

The wacky bounce of the ball, and you happened to be in the right place at the right time …. The innocent wrong note, that the band just runs with …. giving the crowd (and you) a moment they will never forget …. Joseph, going from Eqyptian prison, to Deputy Pharaoh.

But if you don’t dream the Crazies …. you won’t be ready.

So get behind the wheel. Keep your eyes peeled.
