There’s huge value in rich conversations.

Over the Pandemic, I’ve had dozens. Most one-on-one. Many via Zoom.

Here’s are 5 factors I’ve observed which make conversations Rich.

1️⃣ Everyone Has A Desperate Need To Be Heard

Otherwise they feel lonely & unwanted.

Looking for anyone who will listen. Please kill my loneliness.

Oftentimes, the solution to their problem will come just from being heard.

2️⃣ They Need To Organise Their Thoughts Aloud

Our minds are noisy places. — Marcus Aurelius

They have to sort the good from the bad. Only way to do that is to ramble.

To find out what they really think.

3️⃣ You Desperately Need To Be Heard Yourself

But you can only focus on one person at a time.

So you need to feel secure yourself, going in.

Enough to suspend your own unheardness.

4️⃣ Rich Conversation Needs Prep Time

Go straight in on the heels of something else, your focus will be wrong.

You will be unable to listen. Still processing the last activity. Leave a gap.

10 minutes is usually sufficient.

5️⃣ Rich Conversation Needs Debrief Time

You’ll hear people say, My mind is spinning!

Brain overloaded. So much awesome stuff! Hard to cope. Plunge straight into a new activity, you’ll lose the awesomeness. Next activity won’t get your best either.

Again, 10 minutes is enough.

Apply these principles, and you’ll become a great conversationalist!
